Activity 2: We flew paper airplanes to calculate distance and we used it to convert inches to feet. The fractions we got from that conversion were used to write expressions with fraction operations. 

 

Here are some of the airplanes that our students made.

Geometry Formulas that you need to memorize:

 

Square and rectangle:    A = length x width

 

Triangles:                       A = (base x height)/ 2          

 

Parallelogram:               A= base x height

 

Trapezoid:                         

         

 

Circles:                       A = Pi x r x r

                                   C = Pi x d     or Pi x 2 x r

           

INTEGER RULES


 Adding :

   Think if adding as putting two quantities together...

            If you add a  + number and a + number =  + number

            If you add a  - number and a - number = - number

            If you add two different kinds of integers... 

                recall how we went back and forth on the number line, 

                or how we drew pluses and minuses

                ex:  -6 + (+2) = -4

                  - - - - - -   and ++   =  - - - -  there are more minuses            

 

         Subtracting:  Add the opposite

               ex: - 5 - (- 4)  = - 5 + (+ 4) = -1   

               change the problem to an addition problem 

 

         Multiplying/Dividing : They have the same rules

            ex:  Two  - numbers produce a + answer   ex:  -5 x -5 = +25

                  Two + numbers also produce a  + answer  ex:  +5 x +5 = +25

                  A      +   x   -  producers a - answer.    ex: +5 x -5 = -25

Decimal Rules


When you don't see the decimal it's on the end,

             Why? If you don't see the decimal, it is a whole number. 

 

When you add and subtract line up the decimal. 

              Why? Place value rules must be respected

 

When you multiply move the decimal when you are done. 

               Why? Because you are multiplying parts of a whole 

 

When you divide make the divisor a whole number by multiplying by a multiple of ten. Multiply the dividend by that same multiple of ten. 

              Why? It is easier to divide by a whole number. 

 

 

FRACTION RULES


Adding and Subtracting: 

                Make sure you have a common denominator. 

                How do you find a common denominator... list all the multiples and find one that's common to all denominators

*** Special notes for subtraction... if you can't subtract because the first fraction is smaller than the second fraction, remember to regroup. 

 

 

Multiplying:

               Multiply numerators and denominators. 

               Mixed numbers... first turn them into improper fractions (see you notes)... then multiply numerators and denominators. 

 

Dividing: 

              Multiply by the reciprocal. (reciprocal... flip the fraction)

              Mixed numbers... first turn them into improper fractions, then multiply by the reciprocal.
